A Thistle?

I came across a thistle in the grounds at Bramall Hall the other day.  Now I'm used to thistles but this one had some of its stalks as tall as I am!  And the heads were almost as big as my hand.  And these aren't even in Scotland where the thistle is the national plant.

  1. Hmmm...it almost looks like a mix between a pine cone and a thistle, doesn't it? What a neat find, GB.

Hope you're well, enjoying your time with John and family.

Love to you, dear treasure of a friend ♥

  2. A friend of mine bought a house a few years ago. She bought it in the winter so did not know what was in the garden. The next summer in one of her flowerbeds there was some kind of thistle plant that grew as high as the house - 3 or 4 metres at least!

  3. I erroneously posted this on Eagleton Book Notes and my niece Helen pointed out my error and also posted:

They look like globe artichokes (still a type of thistle). We saw them at Bicton Park and they also have them in Otter Nurseries.

Before I read Heather's comment, I was thinking that the base looks like a pine cone.

  5. They are lovely, very much like the huge ones in our garden, which of course you photographed also.

  6. I have decided that I am really losing the plot. I was convinced that I saw them at Bramall Hall. But these were the ones I photographed in your garden. I have just checked the original photograph date. Oh dear. Old age cometh not alone!

  7. That looks like an Artichoke - a type of thistle but most get eaten before they bloom.

  8. That simply looks like an artichoke, a type of thistle but many people wouldn't know it because most of them get eaten before they have a chance to bloom.
